The First 5 Minutes: My First Meditation Attempt

In late August 2024, I decided to try meditation for the first time. No expectations, no deep spiritual goals—just 5 minutes of stillness. I sat on a chair in a quiet room, closed my eyes, and focused on simply being.

It wasn’t easy.

A few seconds of stillness, and then—thoughts. Random, persistent, unstoppable. I tried to let them go, but they kept coming back, again and again. I felt a little frustrated. Shouldn’t my mind be quiet? Isn’t meditation supposed to feel peaceful?

A quick search reassured me: this is completely normal. Meditation isn’t about forcing thoughts away but about observing them without attachment. I also learned that starting small is key—even just 5 minutes a day can make a difference if practiced consistently.

Fitting meditation into my daily life wasn’t easy at first. Between work, responsibilities, and an ever-busy mind, there was always an excuse not to do it. But I kept going. I meditated, for example:

  • On the chair in my room.
  • On the couch while waiting to leave for work.
  • Even in the car while waiting for my buddy to finish his workout.

I was tempted to give up when I didn’t notice any immediate improvements. But over time, those 5 minutes started feeling more natural. Slowly, I found moments where my mind truly settled, even if just for a brief moment. The thoughts never fully disappeared—but I learned that meditation isn’t about stopping thoughts. It’s about learning to be present despite them.

That was the beginning.

Would I have expected this simple habit to evolve into something more? Not at the time. But I’m glad I didn’t quit.
